A Winter Visit to the Midwest

Although we have conducted overseas trips for students with Rainbow Bridges teachers before, we had our first homestay program this year. As with previous travel programs, we wanted to create a program that featured a trusted professional teacher as well as connections to other children.

Although many homestay programs have arrangements with kind families, having an expert on language acquisition who has lived in Japan present and other children to play with makes the experience much easier and better for improving one’s English.

During winter vacation, one of our first-year high school students flew from Fukuoka to Chicago in the United States to reconnect with his former teacher, David, and stay at his home with his family for two weeks.

Highlights include braving the flight and passing through Immigration on his own, experiencing a real American family Christmas and the Christmas season in the United States, attending a basketball game, touring the University of Illinois, shopping at malls, supermarkets and Wal-Mart, visiting David’s relatives and meeting other children, trying new food and drinks, experiencing the nuances of daily life in the USA, and traveling to the major cities of St. Louis and Chicago. David’s family lives in Champaign, Illinois, a small city with a major university in the American Midwest. St. Louis sits at the confluence of the great Mississippi and Ohio Rivers and is home to the Gateway Arch and the outstanding City Museum. Chicago is the third largest American city and has some of the tallest buildings in the world as well as world-famous sports teams, museums, and food.

In 2025, we will offer homestay programs for the United States as well as Australia for all members of the Rainbow Community, including former students. Contact us early if an experience like this might be of interest to your family.
